Massimo Vitali –Arcadian Remains

Preview

The exhibition at Bonni Benrubi Gallery includes new photographs from Spain, Greece, Turkey and Italy and expands upon the artistʼs established oeuvre of sociolandscapes.

From his vantage point high above the scene, Massimo Vitali captures groups in vast public spaces and exposes human behavior at itʼs most primitive and stripped down. We experience the quiet chaos of play and leisure, the realism of the photograph as a document and the surrealism of his extraordinary views.

In this recent body of work the architecture of place comes to the forefront and dominates as subject. Vitali is not only contending with the disorder and surprise of humans but the natural world as well. The touch of a wave as it surmounts an ancient peak shows the photographer at his most nuanced, taking on not just what populates the landscape but the landscape itself.

Massimo Vitali began his career as a photojournalist and in 1994 went on to pursue his own vision as contemporary photographer.
