Chuon Nyra

Preview

Chuon Nyra was born in Cambodia in 1989. She began to feel interested in the potential and the meaning of photography after joining a workshop. While working on her techniques, she soon starts to look for a “story to tell”.

Her first serie Time was inspired by the souvenir of a conversation she heard between her mother and her grandma. “They were talking about the time when they didn’t have a watch and had to guess time according to the shadow and the position of the sun.”  Chuon Nyra learned this natural technic of measuring time and since then pays more and more attention on how shadows are moving, like the needles of a clock. She decided to set up and picture this analogy at different times of the day.

This exercise gives her the opportunity to explore the game of light and shadow, so important in photography, at the same time, she reflects on time and society moving on. “I wanted to remind the new generation that there was a time when people didn’t have mobile phones to check time, not even a watch.”
