In late October 2012, lower Manhattan lost power for several days as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Christophe Jacrot roamed the streets at night to capture this unique moment.

I went to meet a friend at his apartment on 24th street. He told me that he was living by candlelight. I was shocked when I arrived. I had no idea that I city could be entirely without lights. There was nothing—I mean NOTHING. No signs, no street lamps, no stoplights. All of lower Manhattan was plunged into darkness. The streets were ghostly, with every passerby becoming an eerie silhouette.
The only lights on the photographs are headlights. The light in the sky is coming from Brooklyn. The little white streaks are pedestrians’ flashlights, the purple lights are from the police cars patrolling the city. This is mighty New York, with feet of clay.
