Steve Sabella, a Berlin-based artist who uses photography and photographic installation as his principle modes of expression, was born in Jerusalem in 1975. He studied photography at the School of Photography and New Media, Jerusalem, in 1994, and he holds a B.A. in visual arts from the State University of New York, Empire State College ; a M.A. in photographic studies with distinction from the University of Westminster, U.K.; and a M.A. in art business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. He was one of the artists commissioned for Sajjil: A Century of Modern Art (2010), the inaugural exhibition of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, Qatar, where he presented his installation Settlement – Six Israelis & One Palestinian.

Sabella’s international group shows include Neighbours in Dialogue: Istanbul Collection for Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art Sarajevo, at BM Contemporary Art Centre, Istanbul, in 2007 and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sarajevo, Bosnia, in 2008; The Gates of the Mediterranean (2008), Palazzo Piozzo, Casa del Conte Verde, Rivoli, Italy; Palestine: La Création dans tous ses êtats (2009), Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; Deconstructing Myths and Realties (2009), Project Space, Galerie Caprice Horn, Berlin; NOW: Contemporary Art of the 21st Century, September 26, 2009, auction at Phillips De Pury, London; This is Not a Love Song (2010), The Empty Quarter Gallery, Dubai, U.A.E.; The Changing Room: Arab Reflections on Praxis and Times (2011), Spazio Qubi Gallery, Turin, Italy; Les Recontres d’Arles 2013, France; and Photoquai 2013, Musée du quay Branly, Paris. A retrospective, Steve Sabella in Exile (2010), was shown at Metroquadro Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli/Turin, Italy, and the solo exhibition Euphoria & Beyond (2011) was presented at The Empty Quarter Gallery, Dubai He received the Ellen Auerbach Award, a development scholarship for young international photographers, in 2008 from the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
