Cornelia Wilhelm was only nineteen years old when she arrived in New York to work as a photographer’s assistant. She felt instantly at home and began to explore and document ‘life’ at every level in the Big Apple.

Working as a set assistant for Pirelli during the day, she spent her nights, her time off, photographing the city and its people, capturing the very essence of New York in the 1980’s from the experimental, to the edgy and exciting, to the commonplace and the everyday. She photographed neighborhoods like the Bronx and Harlem, with their own unique culture and identity. She visited Coney Island with its worn-down amusements, the boardwalks and the fairground rides, the hot-dog stands and yesterday’s “star attractions”.
