Lillian Bassman’s long artistic career involved several equally-successful changes of direction. As a young woman, she worked simultaneously in painting, drawing and dance, disciplines she was later to build into her photography to create a unique new idiom.

The exhibition Brushstrokes looks at a selection of her photography, providing an introduction to the unique and prolific work of a woman who, heedless of the rules of photography, used the medium to give free rein to her creativity. At a time when garments tended to hang stiffly on the models’ bodies, Bassman’s pictures reveal a natural interaction of the models with their clothes.
