Laurent Monlaü: The World Cup in Brazil

Preview

The photographer Laurent Monlaü, accompanied by Louise Monlaü for video and Marc Antoine Simoni for the texts, went to Brazil for six weeks to experience the World Cup on a daily basis.

“The idea was to follow the event from a single location. I’m a football fan. I wanted to do a daily review of the World Cup from Itaparica Island and the city of Salvador de Bahia. Being already familiar with the place from a project I did ten years ago, I’d be better equipped to approach the event without spreading myself too thin. Salvador is a large city on the northeastern coast, the poorest state in Brazil, the cradle of African culture and its beliefs in Brazil. Salvador is the bay of all saints, a unique natural site which houses all the tankers and freighters of the large commercial port. In the heart of the bay is Itaparica Island, 35 kilometers long. In Salvador de Bahia, the country’s former capital, six matches are scheduled.”

Following the group’s daily reports is a unique and exciting way to participate in the World Cup, and to rediscovered the atmosphere, landscapes and music of this fascinating but challenging country. The newspaper Libération is publishing one photo per day.
