Budapest: Magnum First & Contact Sheets

Preview

Two Magnum Photos exhibitions are being held this summer in Budapest, Hungary: Magnum First, the agency’s first exhibition, at the Hungarian House of Photography in the Mai Manó House; and, down the street at the Robert Capa Center, Contact Sheets, Magnum’s most recent exhibition.

Founded in 1947 in New York by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour, the Magnum agency has always given its photographers freedom both in the subjects they choose to photograph and the way they photograph them. Group exhibitions helped successfully identify the eclectic members as a, “a community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually.” (Henri Cartier-Bresson)

This was the angle taken with the very first traveling Magnum exhibition, held from June 1955 to February 1956 in Austria, under the title Gesicht der Zeit (“The Face of History”). The choice of country might appear deliberate, since three young Austrian photographers had recently joined the agency, but the title is no less revealing for its evocation of August Sander’s Antlitz der Zeit (1929). This book, along with the series Menschen des 20. Jahrhundert is being presented this year by Feroz in Bonn.
