Clifford Ross

Preview

The painter and sculptor Clifford Ross turned to photography in the mid-1990s. The photographs in the series Hurricane were taken in Long Island, New York. Standing waist-deep in the ocean and held by ropes, the artist confronts the violence of the elements, offering an original perspective on the immensity of climate phenomena.

Faced with the technical limitations of cameras at his disposal, Ross decided to create an “antidote” to his problems. Weighing in at 55 kilograms and standing 1.8 meters tall, the R1 (“R” for Ross) looks like one of the early accordion cameras from the 19th century. Made entirely from salvaged materials, , including a 1943 military camera used for aerial photographs, the R1 produces ultra high-resolution images: 2.6 gigabytes, about 100 times more data than the most advanced digital cameras.
