On Friday, May 31st, 2013, when Turkish police spent two days using tear gas to disperse a few thousand demonstrators protesting the construction of a new shopping center over Gezi Park, one of Istanbul’s rare green spaces, the events brought together a large portion of the local youth, who were increasingly upset with the government’s systematic repression. It was a historic moment for Turkey, as evidenced by graffiti reading “May 31st” on walls throughout the city. The incident quickly became political, with peaceful protests spreading throughout Turkey, which were in turn brutally suppressed by police.
Emine Gozde Sevin and Jake Price were both in Istanbul when the events raged, each compiling an emotional record of the event and the months that followed, when the repression was less visible but no less crushing. .
