Camera #8 : The second life of photographs

The latest issue of Camera is dedicated to the second life of vernacular photographs and how artists today are reappropriating them and elevating them to the status of art. Camera spoke with Joachim Schmid, one of the key figures in this movement which has attracted “para-photographers” since the turn of the century.

For over three decades, Schmid has salvaged supposedly banal photographs from the street and web, recycling them into  rich conceptual work questioning the role of the photographers as well as the status and future of photographs. This issue sheds light on the history of the genre through the work of Hannah Höch, John Heartfield, Erwin Blumenfeld, Coco Fronsac, and a profile of Pier 24, an unusual exhibition space in San Francisco.
