Melbourne : Pia Johnson

Preview

Edmund Pearce presents Pia Johnson’s new photographic series In a dim light… which captures the experience of being displaced, lost and fragmented in a foreign place.

The artistic concept for the new series grew out of Pia Johnson’s 2013 residency at Studio Kura, in Itoshima Japan and explores ideas around insomnia and otherness, coming together to create an experience of disquiet and darkness.
In a recent article in the October issue of Artist Profile, Sarah Sweet writes; “In a dim light… successfully unravels mixed tones of emotion that tells of an influential and personal narrative.”
The new work continues some of the themes that Johnson’s work is concerned with, issues about cultural difference, diaspora and identity, all of which have stemmed from her mixed background of Chinese Malaysian and Italian Australian descent.
Pia has exhibited across Australia as well as internationally, and her work is collected in various public and public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria. She has been a finalist in the Josephine Ulrich and Won the Schubert Prize, along with USA Onward Compe ’12, and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale Take a Bow Performance Photography Prize.
