Max Baur : Studies with the camera, vintage photographs

Preview

Max Baur is one of the important photographers of the 20th century in nature and plant studies. Born in 1898 in Günzburg an der Donau, his early works show German landscapes, especially the environment of the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. Not much later, he finds his passion for architecture.

Prior to World War I, he completes his apprenticeship as a bookseller and establishes his first studio in Werningerode in 1928. In the same year, he starts  publishing photography postcards. Max Baur becomes acquainted with the German author Hermann Hesse. In 1934, he is invited to participate in the prestigious Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner [association of German photographers]. Later, he moves to Potsdam, where he publishes his first monography in 1937. After deserting to south Germany with his family, they finally settle down in Aschau, where Max Baur opens his atelier of photography in 1953. His numerous portfolios of German cities, landscapes and churches prove him to be the pioneer of his metier. Nobody combined utmost elegance with modernism as well as Max Baur did. In 1988, he passed away in Munich.

Throughout his life,  nature is his greatest passion. Especially his plant and landscape studies made him  one of the great photographers of the 20th century. Max Baur himself prefers the title ‘painter of light’ over ‘photographer’. For him, light is the decisive factor for taking photographs. Through a perfect balance of light and shadow, he creates wonderful and elegant masterpieces.

His love for details and dynamic shapes can be found in all of his works. His work is modern, but at the same time romantic. The avantgarde and the German Bauhaus influence him greatly. With his photography, especially the commissions for advertising and industry, he established a radical new way of seeing – always with modest elegance and the beauty of pure shapes.

From October 17th 2014 to February 26th 2015, Kleinschmidt Fine Photographs shows Max Baur’s work series “Studien mit der Kamera” [studies with the camera] as the first of three One-Man-Shows with rare vintage quality.  Is a selection of breathtaking veduta. Max Baur gave these 23 miniatures as a Christmas present to his youngest apprentice.
