Ryuichi Ishikawa: Winner of the Prix Kimura Ihei

Preview
Ryuichi Ishikawa, 30, was born in Okinawa. He was a boxing champion before becoming a photographer. He’ll be in residency for the next two months at the Galerie/Nord in Paris. This is his first trip to Europe and his first exhibition outside of Japan.

A Hasselblad dangling from his neck, Ishikawa captures portraits from his daily life: the marginalized, the poor, the homeless, drug addicts, transexuals. They occupy the lowest rung in a deeply hierarchical society.

In March 2015, Ishikawa was awarded the prestigious Prix Kimura Ihei for young Japanese photographers. Previous winners include Rinko Kawauchi, Toshio Shibata, Keizo Kitajima and Naoya Hatakeyama.
