Los Angeles : Five Cinematographers, One frame at a Time

Preview

This year as MOPLA (Month of Photography in LA) kicks off, the Loft at Liz’s is showing the work of five cinematographers and one still photographer in a group show called Concept to Reality. Vilmos Zsigmond, Peter Rodger, Phil Parmet, Jacek Laskus , Ed Lachman and photographer, Isabella Vosmikova have covered the room with pictures that prove cinematographers are as interesting one frame at a time as they are shooting millions of feet of film on movies.

If you are a lover of cinematography this is a rare opportunity to see what some of the great cinematographers do when it’s just their eye and desire versus a crew of a hundred and the weight of budget, story line and directors to please. Curated by Producer and photography lover Simon Edery, Concept to Reality explores how a director of photography,  who normally spends their time making pictures intended to be seen at 24 frames a second changes their vision when they make pictures one frame at a time. What becomes important to them when nothing moves?

Known for their work on movies as diverse as Heaven’s Gate, I’m Not There and Grindhouse these cinematographers demonstrate their love of photography by pursuing it during their spare moments, shooting even when they are spending most of their waking hours making moving images as part of a team. The pictures speak for themselves, some capturing moments on set, the weird disconnect between carefully crafted reality and the real world just outside of the movie frame, others looking at the places they find themselves making movies. There are pictures of actors and actresses seen from viewpoints their publicists probably didn’t have prior approval for and beautiful carefully crafted images from on-set photographer Isabella Vosmikova of actors inhabiting their characters in portrait sessions. The styles range from surrealism to pictorialism and the prints range from vintage analog to born digital. What they all have in common is caring enough to make the picture no one has asked for.
