Paris : Images of Conviction at Le BAL

Preview

Le BAL aims to think about the role of photography in our society, but also of our understanding of history. The status of images too often oscillates between those who automatically believe in the truth of an image and those who dispute it. We wanted to explore how experts and historians in charge of investigating crimes develop processes to turn images into “proof.” The photograph documents the scene where the act occurred, making the consequences visible. But can we really learn something from what we see in a picture?

Most of the photographs on display are from police and military archives, which were never intended for display in a museum space like Le BAL. Why this choice?

This exhibition shows that a photograph is not a piece of evidence in itself but depends instead,of establish facts, on the interpretation and mediation of the investigator. For three years, we identified 11 historic and contemporary cases, convincing those in charge of the images to entrust them to us, and invited an expert to decipher each case.
