Debbie Fleming Caffery : Alphabet

Preview

In her new book, Alphabet, Debbie Fleming Caffery chose twenty-six black and white photographs, each corresponding with letters of the alphabet, from her extensive archive along with some images she created that were inspired by her granddaughter. Fall Line Press publisher, William Boling, says it is “a children’s book disguised into an art book.”

Caffery’s other monographs include: Carry Me Home (Smithsonian, 1990), The Shadows (Twin Palms Press, 2002) of which Francis Ford Coppola wrote, “Debbie Fleming Caffery’s work radiates the fusion of her personal passion with the emotional energy of her subjects”; Polly (Twin Palms Press, 2005) chronicles her long friendship with a solitary and proud African-American woman in the sugar country of Louisiana; and The Spirit and the Flesh (Radius Books 2009) which celebrated her long-term project of women working as prostitutes in Mexico, for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005. Gitterman Gallery writes of her work, “Caffery wields a painterly use of light and dark in her depiction of the pain and turmoil that surrounds these women. She neither judges, nor makes a statement about them. The depth of expression in these images echoes the darkness these women endure. Caffery is singular in her ability to create a beautiful image, while still evoking this weight of existence.”

During her 30 year career, Debbie Fleming Caffery’ work has been collected by numerous museums including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; New Orleans Museum of Art; George Eastman House in Rochester; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France.
