Berlin : Giacomo Brunelli, Hamburg

Preview

At the invitation of the Hamburg Triennial of Photography and Flâneur New Urban Narratives Artistic Residency, Italian photographer Giacomo Brunelli spent several weeks in Hamburg during spring 2015. Brunelli had achieved international recognition for his series “The Animals”, published in 2008 by Dewi Lewis, and for the series “Eternal London” that the Photographer’s Gallery presented in London in 2014. Giacomo Brunelli has developed an individual, authentic visual language that he likes to describe as “film-noir-style”. He works with a Miranda Sensomat 35mm camera from the 1960ies that was a gift from his father and he develops small format, analog black and white prints in his own darkroom. During early morning walks through town, Brunelli randomly follows passers by and animals, often for quite some time, before deciding to take a picture – the city of Hamburg and it’s landmarks appear as the backdrop to these small urban short stories.

Giacomo Brunelli, born 1977 in Perugia, lives and works in London. His work is exhibited and published internationally and is found in important public collections such as the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art (Japan) or the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (USA).
