These photographs are inspired by “The Legend of Saint Julien the Hospitalier,” one of Gustave Flaubert’s Three Tales. Based on Légende Dorée by Jacques de Voragine, this text has been with me for years. It is a tale of initiation, of redemption. The epic breath that gives it life is rather different than my own photographs, which reveal more about intimacy, and whose aesthetics tend towards understatement. But the oscillation between cruelty and gentleness, between light and shadow, between the haunting presence of nature and animals—full-fledged characters in the text—are other themes found in my work.

Laurent Deglicourt was born in 1965. He bought his first camera when his son was born. Little by little, photography became his passion.
