Susan May Tell: New York

Preview

The New York Chapter of the American Society of Media Professionals hold last week the (ASMP NY) Ninth Annual Fine Art Photography Portfolio Review. Susan May Tell is the Fine Art Chair of ASMPNY and produced the Fine Art Portfolio Review. She help us to organize this day in l’Oeil. Thanks to her, here is her presentation:

“Unlike most portfolio reviews which charge photographers, ours is free–a benefit to members, produced by members.

It only is made possible because of the incredible support we get from the New York Photo Community, comprised of galleries, curators, critics, collectors, dealers and fellow artists, who share their time, energy and expertise as reviewers.

Each year we invite a variety of reviewers, experts in different genres, to meet the need of the photographers who create a wide range of work. Each year we also try to mix it up and invite new reviewers for added diversity.

The Fine Art Review was started by the chapter’s then-President, Stephen Mallon, and it’s been growing ever since. Although I became the producer 4 years ago, Mallon remains involved and is a strong presence in organizing the event.

The production of the Review is a major and time-consuming event and the members of the Board, led by Frank Rocco who is the chapter President, are the reason it continues to be such a success! It is truly a team effort!! We are, after all, all volunteers who are working photographers. Everybody’s contribution makes a huge difference.

Although I started as a fine art photographer, a chance review with Lilo Raymond led to my going to The New York Times which led to my spending the next 25 yrs as a successful photojournalist and editorial photographer, working for clients like TIME & LIFE Magazines. A few years ago I decided to no longer accept commissions so I could once again focus on my personal work.

I believe at the heart of every editorial & commercial photographer is a fine art photographer which is what drew them to the field of photography in the first place. As Fine Art Chair of the chapter, I am glad that ASMP nurtures the artist in our members.”

The New York Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers is the largest photographers’ organization in the world. ASMP has over 7,000 members, including many of the worldʼs greatest photographers, in 40 chapters nationwide. Daniel Lebor of Rector Set Studios sponsored this year’s Review which was held in his studio.
