Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops 2014

Preview

APFW was founded in 2005 by Jean-Yves Navel and a group of international photographers. Navel has lived in Siem Reap for the past fifteen years. He is now the director of the festival, one of the oldest photography events in Southeast Asia. The festival is an international platform and free educational resource for emerging photographers.

The festival is divided into three parts:

1) A series of eight projections and thirteen indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Nearly 140 photographers are selected each year. In 2014, we received over 1,750 submissions from 93 countries.

2) Workshops for Asian photographers. Each year, 30 participants from throughout the region are invited to attend free workshops given by world-renowned photographers. All of the “tutors” are volunteers. With new festivals appearing throughout the region, education has become an increasingly essential element of our work. We help alumni throughout their careers by giving them advice on their photographs, answering their questions, putting them in touch with journalists, picture editors, festival directors and so on. This proximity to young photographers makes us more of a large family than an institution. Over the past decade, we have been happy to play an important role in the careers of some of the best photographers from the region on the international stage.

3) Workshops at the Anjali House, which welcome over 80 underprivileged children from Siem Reap. It is an NGO providing food, education, healthcare and access to art. French photographer Antoine d’Agata (Magnum Photos) began these workshops in 2005. Photography encourages and nurtures the innate creativity of children while helping with their development, confidence and social skills. Ten “tutors,” mostly alumni, are all volunteers.
