Art Kane by Robert Longo & Jorma Kaukonen

Preview

Art Kane has produced some of the most iconic images of our time. His photography exudes tremendous courage, addressing race, pop culture, politics, and beauty in an untraditional way. Seeing beyond the immediate medium, he opened up photography’s scope. Reflecting and capturing his time, Kane employed ideas outside photography, colliding a palette of pop/counter-culture, surrealism, journalistic perspective, painterly techniques, and a cinematic aura. His images have a unique ability to beg you to look longer than you ordinarily would, grabbing hold, and echoing in your mind’s eye.

Looking at this book of Kane’s photos, I realize how profoundly his work influenced my own work and life. I grew up with his images plastered on my teenage bedroom walls: Cream on the train tracks, The Who wrapped in The Union Jack, Jefferson Airplane in the desert, among others. This book is a hallucinatory time trip, seeing images that are imprinted on the American psyche. Kane’s boldness with image making, his experimentation, and his ability to balance nature with theater moves me. I can feel in Kane’s photos the unmistakable sense of true joy in their making, and I thank him.

Robert Longo, Artist

Out of the blue, Art Kane’s name came up. I hadn’t thought about him for a long time, but there it was and so I immediately found some of his work to look at. Powerful and stunning… way ahead of his time… still ahead in this time! Immersed in the tapestry of his vision I found myself transported into a parallel universe where, for a moment, I could see things through his eyes. I shall revisit this! Beautiful. Interestingly enough, my father was a lifetime civil servant employed by the U.S.State Department. He viewed my music career with a jaundiced eye… until Art Kane’s photograph of the Jefferson Airplane on the cover of Life Magazine. At that moment he accepted the path I had chosen. Good times for sure.
