Julia Fullerton-Batten : Selected Images 2004 – 2014

Preview

Julia Fullerton-Batten presents Selected images 2004-2014, her solo exhibition for the first time in Baltimore. Best known for her ground breaking series Teenage Stories (2005-2006) London based, Julia explored the complex emotional, physical and social transitions experienced by adolescent girls. Teenage Stories depicted  young girls passing into the beginnings of adolescence where the reality of responsibility and the non-reality of the fantasy life of a young child played themselves out in domestic/suburban scenes. Her images contrasted through scale and dis-belief, she placed her subjects in a dreamworld where reality and fantasy coexist.

Her following bodies of work, School Play (2007), In Between (2008-2009) and Awkward (2011) continued the Teenage Stories context as  her subjects progressed to young adulthood.
In 2012, Mothers and Daughters explored the extreme dynamic of Maternal relationship, In Unadorned, the same year, the photographer examined the role of the human figure and its objectification in contemporary media. For this series, Fullerton-Batten selected full figured subjects, those that contemporary media, and society would deem “fat” and considered undesirable. She placed each subject into a contemporary still life environment drawn from a period in historical painting when the fuller figure was considered true to life and desirable. Her subjects appear comfortable, without shame or inhibition, however we as a society, influenced and manipulated are lead to believe that these people must not be comfortable in their own skin. This fuels a deeper subtext that we, as visual consumers must understand and discern: reality vs. truth in advertising.

This series was followed by Blind (2013), A Testament to Love (2013) Korea (2013) and In Service (2014).
