Well-known post-war photographer Edouard Boubat (1923-1999) always endeavoured to express the fine, gentle and admirable through his art. Throughout his life, he carefully stored certain prints, including some unique, previously unseen vintages, which are a rare treasure for us today. He also collected works by contemporaries and friends such as Man Ray. All of this was kept in his workshop but is now to be sold at auction by Thierry de Maigret, in partnership with Jean Di Sciullo and Agathe Gaillard at Hôtel Drouot in Paris on Friday  October 16th.

Edouard Boubat studied to become a photo-engraver at Ecole Estienne . However, after the war, returning from two years of compulsory labour in Germany, he bought his first camera and turned to photography. He sought to celebrate beauty and his work is filled with extraordinary luminosity. His met his wife Lella at around the same time and she features in numerous portraits . In 1951, he joined Réalités and travelled the world for the prestigious magazine.

Among the most exceptional pieces on sale, the final workshop vintage of one of his best-known photographs, a profile portrait of Lella with her friend Seguis in the background, has been estimated at between €50,000 and €60,000 (1). Edouard Boubat quoted Marcel Proust when talking about this photograph, saying it was “made from the transparent substance of our best moments”. The auction also includes a previously unseen full-face view of his muse, estimated at between €20,000 and €30,000.

There are numerous other lots for sale, including vintages from the 1940-50s, estimated between €800 and €2,500. Many of these prints feature Paris and illustrate the breadth of his talent and his celebration of life as a “peace correspondent”, as Jacques Prévert called him. The many different portfolios are bound to appeal to admirers too (2, Children in the Snow).
Worn down by illness towards the end of his life, he returned to the origins of the medium, producing photograms of flowers placed on photosensitive paper. Twelve of these later works will also be up for sale.

Edouard Boubat was also a big photography collector. The images he bought reveal his taste and his love of his art, which he saw as a way of capturing the fleeting moment: “The present is rare, the present is obvious.” His collection of prints includes series by Salgado, Brihat, Horvat, Stettner, Man Ray, Klein, Plossu, Facchetti, Atget, the Gipsy and Horse by Koudelka, some marvels by Manuel Alvarez-Bravo, such as La hija de los danzante (3) the artist’s great friend, Riboud, Cornell Capa, and vintages by William Eugene Smith. A very diverse, high-quality range of images, with estimates ranging from €800 to €2,500.

His first cameras, including his Rolleiflex, and W.E Smith’s Leica are also included in the auction.
