Celebrating the Negative : Margaret Bourke-White by John Loengard

Preview

“The Louisville flood burst into the news almost overnight,” wrote Margaret Bourke-White, who was in New York City at the time. “I caught the last plane, then hitchhiked my way from the mud-swamped airport. To accomplish the last stretch of the journey, I thumbed rides in rowboats and once on a large raft … Three-quarters of the city was inundated.”

Four hundred people died. In a segregated part of town, Bourke-White photographed the National Association of Manufacturers’ billboard as it loomed over residents patiently awaiting Red Cross relief supplies.

John Loengard, Celebrating the Negative is available to museums as a touring exhibition from Curatorial Assistance.
