Arles : Jean-François Bauret, A Donation for the Réattu

Preview

Jean-François Bauret, deceased in 2014, was a portraitist who was recently shown at the Rencontres d’Arles.  In 1977 and 1992, he had solo exhibitions there, the last being held at the Musée Réattu/St. Luce commanderie.  Additionally, he lead numerous workshops from 1977 to 1989. Since 2004, he participated in the Rencontres internationals de la photo de nu (Arles’ international nude photography festival).  In 2014, the festival payed tribute to him by presenting two exhibitions: Nudes and Portraits of Artists.

He was a regular of Arles, yet his work is absent from the collections of the Musée Réattu.  This shortcoming will be rectified thanks to the generosity of his wife, Claude Bauret-Allard, who is donating a selection of his works to the city of Arles.  Today, his photographs are exhibited- with other of Bauret’s photographs borrowed for the occasion- premiering in one of the rooms of the museum during Imago, an exhibition dedicated to  portrait  .

From the 1950s, Jean-François Bauret dedicated himself to photography.  He carried out numerous advertising campaigns, some made a strong impression, like his famous Serge Gainsbourg portrait, a “failure” according to the photographer.  The Jean-François Bauret donation will allow he who said: “it’s an act of love to take a portrait” to join one of his masters of photography, Richard Avedon, in the Réattu collection.
