In 2016, British music photographer Gered Mankowitz revisits his legendary Rolling Stones archive for a new exhibition, Off The Hook, and a new signed limited edition book, Backstage. The exhibition opens today in London at Snap galleries, it focuses on the very best of Gered’s Stones’ photography from 1965-67 and coincides with Exhibitionism, the international exhibition on the Rolling Stones opening at the Saatchi Gallery, which will also include a selection of Gered’s images.
Taken together, the book and the show present two very different sides of The Rolling Stones at the height of their early fame. Instantly recognisable images on the gallery walls in spectacular eye-popping large fomats, coupled with a wealth of previously unpublished behind-the-scenes photographs in the book come together in a Gered Mankowitz Rolling Stones extravaganza that you really don’t want to miss.
Off The Hook features well known images from all of Gered’s major sessions with the band, including key album cover sessions for Out of Our Heads, and Between The Buttons, together with a selection of little known and unseen photographs, in dramatic large formats, some up to six feet high.
A centrepiece in the exhibition is the reinterpretation of Gered’s 1965 passport photographs of Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill and Charlie to produce a new artwork, The Cross, a highly colourised installation piece consisting of six jewel-like images in cross formation.
The book Backstage: The Rolling Stones by Gered Mankowitz is being published in July 2016 by Ormond Yard Press and the window to pre-order this incredible signed limited edition is open.
