Andre Kertesz. Thinking Big
Large-scale Photographs from the Estate of Andre Kertesz

This exhibition is the tenth in the series ‘Starting a Photography Collection. Ten Exhibitions in Ten Weeks’; an ambitious programme of weeklong exhibitions in the run-up to the Photo London fair this week. This special presentation of works from the Estate of Andre Kertesz will be staged at our stand at PhotoLondon at Somerset House.

After the Second World War Kertesz began increasingly to return to his earlier works to print them at an enlarged size or to print new pictures at an unprecedented scale.

The exhibition begins with Kertesz famous distortions, and enlarged prints made in the 1940s. It then presents as a key moment, the early 1960s. This was the time that Kertesz international reputation reached new heights through his participation at the Venice Biennale in the summer of 1963, a solo show at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris in the autumn of 1963 and then in 1964 his major retrospective at MOMA in New York. From this moment we are delighted to present the Muguet Seller, one of the largest prints Kertesz ever made, as well as some of the actual exhibition prints Kertesz had made for Venice.

The presentation concludes with a remarkable selection of large prints of some of Kertesz most famous pictures such as the Satiric Dancer, Melancholy Tulip, Meudon and Chez Mondrian, as well as some less familiar works.

Andre Kertesz. Thinking Big follows our acclaimed exhibition of photographs from the Estate of Andre Kertesz, Andre Kertesz in Europe, last year and again presents works, specially chosen from the artist’s estate.

“I am delighted to present this overview of Andre Kertesz brilliant career through exceptional vintage and later prints that demonstrate the creativity and diversity of one of the best-loved photographers of the twentieth century. We are privileged to present this exhibition of pictures from the Artist’s Estate and to present new and established collectors with this opportunity to acquire both iconic and lesser known images”.
