Narbonne : Blue Eyes

Preview

Jean Denis Walter has opened the 3rd edition of the Sportfolio festival in Narbonne. This year there are 15 exhibitions that have been organised in the heart of the small commune of Aude. With many impending sporting events this month, such as Roland Garros, Euro 2016 and also the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, L’Oeil de la Photographie is going to share an aspect of Sportfolio 2016 with you every day for six weeks.

Today our focus is on the exhibition « Blue Eyes » with photographs by Maud Bernos..

For three years, Maud Bernos travelled from port to port, photographing sailors who had just returned to land.

The idea was to capture their faces shortly after they stepped ashore, while their eyes still bore the fatigue, maybe even the fear, but also the triumph, wonder and richness of the horizons they have witnessed.

Bernos’s superb and sensitive photographs are the perfect choice for a Sportfolio exhibition in this, a Vendée Globe year. Four of the sailors in the collection are taking part in the epic round-the-world race, which takes place every four years.

The images all feature in a book called ‘Tous les Marins ont les Yeux Bleus’ (All Sailors Have Blue Eyes), published by Gallimard.
