Luxembourg : Izumi Miyazaki, Cute & Cruel

Preview

Luxembourg’s Wild Project Gallery today inaugurates its summer exhibition featuring Izumi Miyazaki, a young Japanese photographer who has gathered a devoted internet fan base with her inimitable self-portraits. The story behind the phenomenon.

Japan never fails to surprise. I’ve travelled to this country of paradoxes many times but I’m still astounded by its traditions and its hybrid culture that encompasses everything from “kawai” to sheer excess, but above all by its ability to come through incredibly dramatic events such as two atomic bombs, a major economic and identity crisis, repeated earthquakes and, of course, the tsunamis and the irrepressible damage they cause.

Japanese 20 year-olds all have their own unique appearance, but even Tokyo’s inhabitants see Izumi Miyazaki as some kind of encounter of the third kind.

The young photographer’s black hair is cut in a classic bob, her expression dark with the eyes of a doll whose emotions have been erased, and she alternates a conservative dress style with some gaudy get-ups! She graduated from the prestigious Musashino art school and never ceases to amaze!
