The Chelnokov Collection: The history of the Russian exodus through photographs

Preview

On the occasion of the centenary of the Russian revolution, VOZ’Galerie in Paris presents, in its basement screening room, an exhibition of photographs and a 3D projection of stereoscopic images made by Natacha Nikouline’s great-great-uncle, Sergei Chelnokov. His work had disappeared when he was suddenly forced to leave the country at the outbreak of the 1917 Revolution because of his images, and was rediscovered in the first decade of the twenty-first century.

The results obtained thanks to stereoscopic photography are particularly impressive. From a photographic point of view, this body of work shows a great sense of composition and humanist expression. The rediscovery of the archives is a milestone in Russian cultural life, both historically and artistically.

The photographs take the viewers into the heart of the events unfolding in Russia and Europe at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Images chronicling the war and the revolutions alternate with images of travel to Russian and European cities and village and scenes from daily life.
