The winning photos of 2016 Photo Marathon

Preview

On October 22, 2016, 271 participants from seven cities around the Mediterranean set out to document 12 themes in 12 hours. Community associations from Amman, Algiers, Beirut, Ljubljana, Marseille, Naples, and Palermo, organized the 2016 Photo Marathon, which collected 3,088 photographs in one day.

The goal of 2016 Photo Marathon was to get participants to rediscover their cities through active observation and documentation. It was also to use the archive of images in a meaningful way that creates cross cultural understanding – to appreciate the many similarities, differences, contradictions, and life around the Mediterranean and globally through the eyes of the people inhabiting the participating cities.

This year the Mediterranean platform asked the photographers to focus on two over-arching areas and to consider the 12 themes through the angle of migration and heritage. The 12 themes assigned to participants throughout the marathon were: morning, language, work, intersection, saudade, diaspora, hero, someone’s dream, foreign flavors, pattern, nationalism, and waiting.

Seven winners were selected by a jury composed of award-winning photographers and academics representing each of the participating cities.

The jury award winners representing Amman is Krix Berberian, Wissam Andraos from Beirut, Teja Pahor from Ljubljana, Jean Michel Melat Couhet from Marseille, Pasquale Marinelli from Naples, Giulia Montoneri from Palermo, and Wiame Lasri from Algiers.
