Don McCullin, Looking East

Preview

For decades, one of the most respected and decorated photojournalists of our age, Don McCullin has been an insightful and committed witness to human suffering: wars, disease, poverty, revolution and more. Some of his photographs from the suburbs of his native London to wars in Vietnam, Lebanon, and Biafra have become iconic and defining images of the times in which we live.

This exhibition Looking East, presented by Galerie Folia, goes beyond his emblematic pictures and unveils some of his lesser known but equally powerful images that follow the passage of a photographer’s eye across the eastern civilisations . From the remains of Baalbek in Lebanon and Palmyra in Syria (many of which have tragically disappeared) to the poetic visions of India and the intensity of the Vietnam War, the images brought together here embody the depth and breadth of a very special body of photographic work.

Through the intensity of his subtle photographic language, McCullin brings the boundaries between people, countries and social classes to the surface to transform them for the better in his search for absolute beauty and humanity.
