Mois de la Photo : Photo-novel, the words and the pictures

Preview

Charles Bukowski, André Breton, Nathalie Rheims, Georges Perec, Jean Echenoz, Ryu Murakami, Charles Baudelaire, Bret Easton Ellis, Fyodor Dostoyevsky… in many novels the authors have given us descriptions of photos that appear to have existed solely in their imaginations.

With this idea, the team from the Havas gallery in Paris chose 42 literary texts describing photographs and offered some photographers a carte-blanche to bring them to life.

One hundred and fifty photographers from diverse backgrounds – reporting, advertising, street photography, fashion, still-life… – responded to the call to participate in Photo-roman producing one or more photographs for their chosen texts. In total, nearly two hundred photos were produced, a sign of the richness and the diversity of the photographic gaze.

In addition to the exhibition of photographic prints, Photo-roman is also a digital exhibition giving the visitors an innovative journey into photography. Three well-known actors, Edouard Baer, Olivia Bonamy and Stephane Freiss, have lent their voices to create some video modules blending images, voice and sound design, thus bringing an original dimension and a literary timelessness to photography.
