Claude Guillaumin’s New York Fashion and Vintage

Preview

After his first exhibition Woman World at Galerie Artphotoby and the festival Fotofever in 2016, this exhibition is presenting vintage prints of French photographer Claude Guillaumin’s work, taken during the 1970s and 1980s. They commemorate his career in New York where he began alongside famous fashion photographers and models of the time. Claude Guillaumin collaborated with the biggest names in women’s magazines – Elle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Instyle – and, in 1974, made the first Elite calendar, an order from John Casablancas, founder of the modeling agency. He was also chosen by the cult woman magazine of the time, Cosmopolitan, to illustrate their erotic sections. Photos where aestheticism dominated eroticism. Since the 2000s, Claude Guillaumin does portraits of women who are not models, proving that the most beautiful women do not happen to always be “top models”, as he likes to say. In New York, he also captured unique and historic images of Manhattan during those years and is exhibiting them for the first time.
