Photo London: 5 images to buy at Paci Contemporary

Preview

The Eye of Photography asked the galleries exhibiting at Photo London to each present five photographs to be purchased. Paci Contemporary presents selected works by Michal Macku and Teun Hocks.

Michal Macku’s technique consists of tearing of the gelatin emulsion from the photographic film during the negative’s manipulation phase. The film is then placed and rearranged by the artist, so that the images acquire a sort of material- like appearance, with an extraordinary and very spiritual effect. The complexity of the process and the use of several negatives make it impossible to reproduce two identical prints. The result of this technique is unique because it depends on a series of unexpected accidents that turns his work in the dark room into an alchemic process.

Teun Hocks is a performer, photographer and painter, the Dutch artist Teun Hocks uses different artistic languages in an absolutely original way, creating images that are both drawings, photographs and paintings, but also theatrical sets and fragments of story. As Hocks himself explains, he began from a series of sketches, drawings, where his imagination can range over without a definite plan. Gradually, from this set of sketches he creates an idea, a scene more precise, that he paints bigger, as the scenography of a theater. Then, he places himself in front of that backdrop and portrays himself in black and white with a Polaroid. If he is satisfied, he takes a picture in black and white; then repaints it with oil colors.
