British photographer Gered Mankowitz was constantly with the Stones from 1965 to 1967. His collection of photographs offers a very intimate look at the members of the rock group during the period where they became international stars. It was a family friend, Peter Sellers, who had encouraged the young Gered Mankowitz to become a photographer. He was eighteen when he was introduced to the Stones by their manager, Andrew Lood Oldham, following a session with Marianne Faithfull, also managed by Oldham. Their first session in 1965 lead to the album cover for Out of Our Heads, and then to many other album covers, magazines portraits, and even the musicians’ photo IDs.

Later, the Stones decided to bring the British photographer Gered Mankowitz with them for their fourth American tour. They left together, accompanied by the one and only Ian Stewart, group founder converted into tour manager. Over six weeks, they traveled throughout the United States, ending at the RCA studios in Los Angeles where they recorded songs for the album Aftermath. “When I left with them for America, it was only them, me, and the booking agent. We were alone, no entourage, no security, no journalists, no publicists, no make-up artists, no stylists, no tech team, no lights, no set, nothing,” writes Gered Mankowitz.

This exhibition at Photo12 Galerie in Paris gathers famous photographs from the majority of Mankowitz’ sessions with the Stones, some of which are photos for the covers of Out of Our Heads and Between the Buttons, as well as a selection of lesser-known or unpublished photographs emphasized in large-format.
