Gregory Bojorquez, Frame Life

Preview

Bojorquez grew up in East Los Angeles, where he still lives and works today. His career and what would later become his passion began with him photographing his friends and his neighborhood. Bojorquez’s photographs combine all aspects of the culture and life in his hometown; his motifs are found between the worlds of Hollywood and the streets of Los Angeles. The exhibition Frame Life at Cologne based Galerie Bene Taschen shows works from over the last 20 years. Both his black-and-white and his color photographs were captured using only analog cameras.

In his work, Bojorquez attaches great importance to photographing people who are of interest to him: they are usually people that you would not normally find in front of the camera and thus bring a certain humanity into his pictures. Bojorquez was known for captivating real and unpretentious everyday situations, that almost no viewer can escape. He describes his erotic shots as subtle and simple, but never exaggerated or artificial.

The exhibition depicts two worlds that could not be more different from one another. Bojorquez’s photographs taken in East Los Angeles are a striking counterpart to the magnificent world of Hollywood. “What good art can do – it causes to make you wanna do more,” says Gregory Bojorquez.
