Ed van der Elsken, La Vie Folle: A Captivating Book

Preview

From his beginnings in Paris during the 1950s, to his travels around the world, including his images of jazz musicians, the Jeu de Paume’s exhibition La Vie Folle (The Crazy Life) revisits close to fifty years of copious photography and film production. This first retrospective piece, published in French by Parisian editor Xavier Barral, was composed following the artist’s different photography series. Each chapter opens on a publication that each prompted and documents from archives that help re-contextualize the series. The book examines the work through texts from contemporary artists, exhibition curators, and journalists analyzing his major influence on contemporary photography. A must-have publication.
